When you are designing a space, choosing the best lighting elements is a critical design component, and bathrooms are no different. Not only does a well-lit room provide illumination and make a room more appealing, but it makes a room more inviting and allows for more visibility. Bathrooms are also a space where people want to see details of their body and hair, so installing the correct amount and types of lighting features is important. People want to see their faces clearly in the mirror for applying makeup or when shaving, have enough light to do their hair correctly, and be able to step into a bathtub or shower safely.

How Do You Choose the Best Lighting for Your Bathroom?

Bathrooms are typically smaller spaces that may or may not have natural light coming in from windows, so lighting options truly depend on the space and project budget. There are three main fixtures to think through when choosing the best lighting options for your bathroom renovation:

  1. Vanity Lighting
  2. Shower Lighting
  3. Ceiling Fixtures

Vanity Lighting

Vanity lighting includes the light that illuminates the main mirror over the sink in a bathroom space. You want lighting components that frame the mirror and highlight the features of your face. Popular designs are wall sconces on either side of a mirror or vanity lights above the entire top of a mirror. If there is natural light, a lower watt bulb is sufficient, but many people like a higher watt bulb for their vanity lighting. The main idea with vanity lighting is to limit shadows on your face.

Shower Lighting

Taking a shower in a darker space is not only a safety hazard, but you cannot see your body for washing or shaving or reading your bath products. Shower lighting is usually recessed to avoid splashing and we recommend a moisture-rated fixture. One overhead light should be enough for a common shower space, but depending on the size you might want two light fixtures, especially if you have a double shower.

Ceiling Fixtures

Ambient lighting from ceiling fixtures is the main source of light in a bathroom. There should be enough light to illuminate all areas of the bathroom for someone to walk around safely. Ceiling fixtures can be simple or more creative as long as they give off the correct amount of light needed.  Many ceiling fixtures are also set up with dimmers so people can control the amount of light at certain times of the day. This is a great feature for when someone has to go to the bathroom in the middle of the night and they do not want to blind themselves with full light.
